Spectators at a Games are often through security two or three hours before their session begins. The delay is a design decision, not a failure of the gate operation.
Screening happens at the perimeter
A Games park is secured at its outer boundary rather than at each individual venue. Once a spectator is inside the fence, moving between buildings requires only a ticket scan.
This is the same model American organizers use for large festival sites. One deep screening line replaces a dozen shallow ones, which is cheaper in staff and more consistent in standard.
The consequence is that entry time and seat time are decoupled. A ticket says when a session starts, and the perimeter says when a spectator should realistically arrive.
Throughput is limited by search, not scanning
Ticket scanning is fast. Bag search and magnetometer screening are not, and they set the ceiling on how many people can pass a checkpoint each hour.
Organizers publish prohibited-item lists aggressively for exactly this reason. Every bag that has to be opened and repacked costs a multiple of the time a clean bag costs.
Because the ceiling is fixed, the only variable left is arrival spread. Encouraging early arrival is the cheapest way to keep the line from becoming a crush.
The park is built to absorb the wait
Once inside, spectators find seating, food, shade and screens. None of that is incidental; it exists because thousands of people have to wait somewhere for an hour or more.
Large screens showing other venues do particular work. They convert dead waiting time into something that feels like attendance at the Games rather than time in a queue.
Merchandise and food revenue also concentrates in that window. A spectator with two spare hours inside the fence spends differently from one who arrives at the door on time.
Egress is the harder problem
Entry can be spread across hours. Departure cannot, because a session ends for everyone at once and the whole crowd wants the same rail platform.
Planners therefore stagger session end times across venues within a park. Two large finals ending simultaneously would overwhelm any transit link a host city has.
Some parks deliberately keep food and entertainment open after sessions end. Persuading a share of the crowd to linger is more effective than adding trains.
What this means for arrival planning
The practical advice is to treat the published gate time as the real one. Arriving close to the session start means joining the tail of the peak rather than the front.
Spectators who plan a meal inside the park rather than outside it consistently report an easier day. The park is designed to hold them, and the streets outside are not.
None of this is unique to the Olympics, but the scale makes it unavoidable. At smaller events an inefficient arrival costs minutes; at a Games it costs the first event on the card.
