Two clicks on the front wing can rescue a session and they can also hide a fault that will decide the race.
A front wing flap is a cheap fix for an expensive problem
The front flap adjustment is the most convenient tool in the pit lane. A driver complains of understeer, a mechanic winds on angle at the next stop, the car turns better, everyone moves on. I have no objection to the tool. I object to how often it is used as the answer rather than as a stopgap.
Adding front flap does something specific: it increases load at the front axle. That is genuinely useful when the balance problem is aerodynamic and lives in the fast corners, because it shifts the aero balance forward across the whole speed range. It does much less for a car that understeers at low speed, where downforce barely exists and grip comes from mechanical sources like roll stiffness, differential settings and tyre temperature. Wind on flap to fix a slow hairpin and you have made the car nervous in every fast corner in exchange for a change you can barely feel where you wanted it.
That trade is invisible in the moment. The driver reports the hairpin is better because they were thinking about the hairpin. The two tenths given away in the high-speed section arrive as a vague comment about the car feeling edgy, and nobody connects the two.
There is a second cost, which is thermal. A car with more front load leans harder on the front tyres for the rest of the stint. On a circuit that already punishes the front left, adding flap to cure entry understeer can produce a car that is beautiful for four laps and hopeless for fifteen. You have converted a handling complaint into a degradation complaint, and degradation complaints are harder to diagnose because they are gradual.
The honest process is to ask where in the corner and at what speed. Entry, mid or exit. Slow, medium or fast. Those two questions eliminate most wrong answers before anybody touches a spanner. Understeer on entry to a fast corner is aero. Understeer on exit from a slow one is almost never aero and frequently the differential.
None of this is secret. It gets skipped because sessions are short and the flap takes seconds while a differential map change takes a conversation.
Fast fixes are how good cars end up with mysterious weaknesses that persist for a whole season.
