Getting covers onto a cricket square is one of the few sporting operations timed in seconds by people who are not competing. The drill is rehearsed like an emergency procedure.
The square is the priority, not the outfield
Covers protect the pitch and its immediate surroundings first. A wet outfield delays play; a wet pitch can change the match or end it.
That priority order is why the first covers deployed are always the ones closest to the center. Everything else follows if time allows.
Run-up areas come next, because a bowler cannot operate from a slippery approach however dry the pitch itself may be.
Deployment is a manpower problem
Covers are heavy and awkward, and the limiting factor is how many people can be assembled and moving within a minute of the decision.
Grounds therefore hold a cover crew on site throughout play, doing other work but able to drop it. At major matches that crew can number several dozen.
Volunteers are often used at smaller grounds, and the practice is common in American venues hosting cricket where a permanent crew of that size does not exist.
The decision to deploy is made early
Waiting for rain to arrive guarantees a wet pitch. The call is made on radar and on the judgment of the groundskeeper, often while it is still dry.
That means covers sometimes go on unnecessarily, and the crew accepts the false alarms. The cost of a wasted deployment is trivial next to a soaked square.
Umpires do not make this call. The groundskeeper owns the surface, and the umpires own the decision about whether play can proceed on it.
Removal is the slower half
Taking covers off is harder than putting them on, because water pooled on top has to be moved without spilling it onto the surface below.
Crews use rollers and pumps to clear standing water first, then peel the covers in a sequence that keeps the runoff heading away from the square.
This is why a five-minute shower can cost half an hour. The rain stops quickly and the recovery does not.
Drainage decides how much it matters
Modern drainage systems have changed the arithmetic significantly. Outfields that once held water for hours can now be playable soon after covers come off.
That has shifted the crew's job toward speed at the square rather than endurance across the whole field. The pitch remains the part no drainage can rescue.
Spectators watching a cover crew work are watching the only part of a rain delay that anyone can influence. The rest of the delay belongs to the weather.
