Held balls in international basketball are resolved by an alternating possession arrow rather than a jump ball. The change removed a contest that reliably favoured one kind of team.
What the jump ball actually decided
A jump ball restart was contested by the two players involved, so possession went to whichever side had the taller or better-timed jumper on the floor.
Because held balls occur several times a match, that advantage accumulated. A team with a dominant centre gained possessions through height rather than through play.
The outcome also depended heavily on the official's toss, which introduced a source of variation nobody could control or review.
How the arrow works
After the opening jump ball, possession alternates. Each held ball awards the ball to the team the arrow indicates, and the arrow then switches.
The mechanism is entirely deterministic, so both teams know before any held ball occurs who will receive the next one.
It also removes the restart delay, since play resumes with a throw-in rather than requiring officials to set up a contested toss.
The tactics it created
Because the arrow is known, a defence holding it can tie the ball up deliberately, treating a held ball as an alternative to a steal.
Conversely, a team without the arrow avoids situations where a tie-up is likely, particularly when protecting a lead in the closing minutes.
End-of-quarter play is affected too, since the arrow interacts with which team receives the ball at the start of the following period.
Why the professional code kept the jump ball
The leading professional league retained jump balls, valuing the contest as a moment of athleticism and a visible element of the game.
Its rules also produce fewer held balls in practice, because contact standards and travelling interpretations differ, which reduces how often the situation arises.
The divergence is a straightforward difference of priority. One code optimised for predictability and pace, the other for the contest itself.
What the change reveals about rule design
Alternating possession is not fairer in any individual instance. A team may lose a possession it would have won, and the arrow does not care who caused the tie-up.
It is fairer across a match, because the allocation no longer depends on a physical attribute unrelated to the play that produced the held ball.
That trade between local and aggregate fairness recurs throughout rulemaking, and basketball chose the aggregate version.
