Braking gets discussed as a single heroic act. Who brakes latest. Where the boards are. It makes for good commentary and it hides the part of the process where the difference between drivers actually lives, which is the release.

The first phase is close to a solved problem. Get to maximum deceleration quickly, hold it while the aerodynamic load is high, and bleed pressure as speed falls because there is less downforce holding the tyre down. Any professional does this. The variation is small.

The release is different. Coming off the pedal is what transfers load away from the front axle, and how fast you do it determines whether the car turns or pushes. Release too quickly and the front goes light before the car has rotated, so you arrive at the apex with understeer and have to wait. Release too slowly and the rear stays unloaded for too long, which is stable until it suddenly is not. Between those failures sits a narrow band where the car rotates almost for free, and finding it is a matter of a few tenths of a bar over a distance shorter than the car is long.

This is where a chassis is won or lost, not in peak braking. Two cars can pull identical deceleration and behave completely differently on release depending on ride height sensitivity, on how the differential behaves under trailing throttle, on roll stiffness front to rear.

My argument is that this makes brake release a setup priority and it is rarely treated as one. Engineers chase entry stability, because instability is what drivers complain about and complaints get logged. A car set up to be entirely stable on the brakes is a car that does not rotate, and the driver compensates by braking earlier and turning later, which nobody records as a setup fault. It shows up as a slow driver.

There is a driver skill component that cannot be engineered away. The good ones release with something in reserve so they can put pressure back on for a moment if the car does not respond. That requires being deliberately short of the limit at exactly the point where being short of the limit feels like giving up time.

Late braking wins nothing on its own. It just moves the same problem closer to the corner and gives you less room to solve it.
