How Pot Seeding Shapes A World Cup Draw

A World Cup draw looks like chance but operates under heavy constraint. Pots, confederation rules and a fixed drawing order determine most of what the balls can produce.

How the pots are built

Qualified teams are sorted by world ranking at a cut-off date, then divided into pots of equal size. The strongest teams occupy the first pot, the weakest the last.
