A batter finishes with sixty from forty and it reads as a fine innings. Then you look at the shape of it and find eighteen dot balls, which means eighteen deliveries during which the scoreboard did nothing and the pressure moved entirely one way.

Boundary percentage is the statistic that hides this, and it has become popular because it is easy and because it rewards the thing people enjoy watching. It answers how often a batter hits four or six when he scores. It says nothing about the deliveries in between, and the deliveries in between are where the innings is actually built or lost.

The mechanism is about compounding. A dot ball does not just cost one run. It raises the rate required from every ball that follows, which pushes the batter towards a higher-risk shot, which raises his chance of getting out, which brings a new batter to face the bowling he was struggling against. Three consecutive dots against a good bowler routinely produce a wicket two balls later off a much worse one, and the scorecard credits the wrong bowler entirely.

Which is why I would rather have a batter who rotates strike relentlessly and hits fewer boundaries than one who alternates between blocking and swinging. Singles are not a defensive shot. They are what stops a field from being set, they force a bowler to bowl to two different batters, and they keep the required rate from ever reaching the point where risk becomes compulsory.

There is a counterargument in the shortest format and it has some force. When you have very few overs, boundaries are the only way to reach a competitive total, and a batter who accumulates in ones will finish not out and lose. Fair. But even there the good innings are not boundary-only. They are boundary plus rotation, and the batters who last are the ones who can do both rather than the ones who can only clear the rope.

The number I want is dots faced as a share of balls, split by bowler and phase. It is less fun. It predicts far more.

Nobody ever got dropped for a poor boundary percentage. Plenty should have been, for the overs they let go by.
